The perfect GREY wall colour

If you’ve ever built or renovated a home, I’m sure you’ll agree with me that picking paint colours is one of the HARDEST decisions! Worrying if it will be too light, too dark, will it match the cabinetry and compliment the flooring, and the fact that the walls look different in every room and in all different lights – so much to consider!

It took me a long time to find that “perfect grey” for our last home, and it was 100% the most asked question I’ve had over on my Instagram account over the last few years, so much so that as soon as I start typing it, my phone prefills it!

Now, what I’m sure you’re reading this post for…. what paint colour did I use?

We used the colour School Memory by Solver, but I don’t think Solver exists anymore as it looks to have been rebranded and merged with Wattyl Paints.

BUT… I have been to a number of Bunnings stores, picking out samples that look very similar and are a close match to School Memory for you guys, and found a whole bunch of options for you to try out for your own homes, all listed below:

CLOSEST MATCHES:

Silvertone Grey by Taubmans

Frost Fangs by Taubmans

LIGHTER OPTIONS:

Soft Apparition by Wattyl

Grey Spirit by British Paints

Silver Blaze by Taubmans

DARKER OPTIONS:

Tranquil Retreat by Dulux

Secret Passage by Taubmans

I wanted to give a couple of slightly lighter and darker options as well, that all have the same undertone, and strangely enough, Taubmans seemed to have majority of the closest matches!

If you compare these swatches to the huge amount of grey options out there, you’ll see that they all have a very soft neutral undertone, nothing too warm or too cool, more of a silver toned grey, which is exactly what I was looking for, and ended up being VERY happy with how it looked in our last home and seemed to compliment everything perfectly.

Although I won’t be painting the walls grey in the next two builds (going white this time, which is a whole other stress when there are so many whites to choose from – so I might do up a blog post for that also!), but if I were ever to want grey walls again, I would definitely be going with one of the above options.

Hopefully this helps give you some guidance if you’re also searching for your perfect grey, and let me know if you have any questions at all, or want to add your favourite grey option in the comments as well! ♡

    1. Hi there,

Yes we got a tiler to install the marble mosaic tiles, and then a gas fitter installed the gas fireplace 🙂

      Hope that helps! x
