I’ve been on the hunt for a beautiful big rustic looking vase for a while now, but every one that I came across was hundreds of dollars, but I wasn’t sure I could justify spending that much! Since I love DIYing, I figured if I came across a big vase regardless of colour, I would try and create my own, and now that I have I am SO happy!
When I shared the end result over on my Instagram page, so many people also loved it and wanted to know what I did to achieve the rustic look, so I figured I’d create a step by step blog post detailing everything I did!
What you'll need:
– Any vase you like
– Your paint colour of choice (preferably matte or chalk paint)
– A paint brush
– A tablespoon of sand
– Sand paper
– Spakfilla (or a similar gap filler)
I had been looking in thrift stores in the hope to find a big vase to use, but I never had any luck. Fortunately I found this beautiful Neale Whitaker vase from House/ MyHouse, which was perfect!
I’ll add the direct links to each store below:
It was previously on sale online when I last looked, and I was lucky enough to find it for just under $30 at the Perth DFO store, but even at the full price of $89.95 it’s still a great buy for a vase that size!
How to add the rustic look:
STEP ONE: PAINT
Most rustic vases generally have a very matte & almost powdery look to them, so chalk paint is perfect for this project.
If you can find the colour you want ready made in a pot, that’s the easiest option, but I had a specific charcoal with a slight blue hue in mind, so I mixed up a few colours to create exactly what I wanted!
The exact chalk paints I used were:
– “Athenian Black” by Annie Sloan
– “Chicago Grey” by Annie Sloan
– “Aubusson Blue” by Annie Sloan
When you’ve got your paint ready, go ahead and brush on the first coat!
There is generally no prep work required when using chalk paint, which is a big bonus!
STEP TWO: TEXTURE
Once the first layer of paint has dried, before you go on with the second coat, add about a tablespoon of sand to the paint. This sounds strange, but it’s a great way to add a lot of texture to the piece and start to give it a rustic look & feel!
Something to note: I found that when working with textured paint, you can really notice the brush strokes a lot more, so for this piece I made sure to finish off by running the brush in a continuous horizontal circle all the way from the top, down to the bottom, just to add a bit of cohesiveness to the brush stokes.
STEP THREE: SANDING
Once the vase is completely dry, it’s time to get sanding!
You can do as little or as much as you want, but I just brushed a sanding block against different sections randomly around the vase to give it a bit more of an aged look.
Sometimes videos can be a bit more helpful, so if you wanted to see how I did this in action, head over to my Instagram page @jo.marie_blissfulbuilds and tap through my “DIY Decor” highlight until you find this project!
STEP FOUR: SPAKFILLA
And the final step is to get a small amount of Spakfilla (or similar) in your fingers and rub it in, back and forth into different sections all over the vase to create the white flecks, adding the final touch to create this beautiful DIY rustic style vase, at a fraction of the price!
I hope this has inspired you to get crafty and try this project out for yourself, especially if you’ve been on the hunt for that perfect rustic vase, or it was out of your budget! ♡
